Week in review:

  • Home Sweet Home - Sales of new homes in the U.S. unexpectedly rose 4.9% in April to the highest level this year, even as inventories of unsold dwellings climbed to a record. The backlog of unsold homes rose by 2.4 percent to a new record of 565,000 homes on the market. At the April sales pace, it would take 5.8 months to deplete that backlog.

  • China Boom - Bank of China Ltd. on Wednesday priced its Hong Kong initial public offering near the top of the expected range, raising $9.7 billion in the world's biggest stock offering since 2000. China's economy grew at an annual pace of 10.3% in the first quarter.

  • USA Boom - The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of 5.3 percent in the first quarter, faster than the government initially estimated, as companies replenished inventories and shipped more goods overseas. The increase in gross domestic product, the sum of all goods and services produced in the U.S., compares with a 4.8 percent rate reported on April 28, and a 1.7 percent pace in the fourth quarter, the Commerce Department said yesterday in Washington. While less than forecast, growth last quarter was the strongest since July through September 2003.

  • Back to Green - Most equity classes extended there rebound to a third session Friday, ending a two week market correction.
