Week in review:

  • Earn and Spend - Consumer spending increased 0.4 percent after a gain of 0.7 percent in April, the Commerce Department said today in Washington.
Today's report also showed incomes rose 0.4 percent, more than expected, after a 0.7 percent increase that was larger than the government reported last month. The May rise reflected a
jump in proprietors' income, while wages were unchanged.

  • Make each day count - A study by the Center for Retirement Research of people in their 50s and 60s over a 10-year period showed that 41 percent were diagnosed with a major medical condition like heart problems, diabetes or cancer. Thirty-four percent suffered health issues that limited their ability to work and 7 percent suffered a severe disability.

  • Home Sweet? Applications to purchase U.S. homes declined last week to the lowest level since November 2003. The refinancing index has fallen 46 percent from the same time in 2005, and the measure of purchase applications is down 27 percent from a peak in June last year.

  • Playing a Full Round - The Federal Reserve voted to raising the benchmark Fed Funds rate to 5.25 percent, the 17th straight increase. An additional move "may be needed'' only if new statistics warrant it. According to the Fed Funds Futures, the probability of another increase by October remains above 90 percent.

  • Green is Beautiful - Finishing a very challenged quarter, all equity classes bolt for the sky this week, with US Small company (Russell 2000) leading the charge, up 5 percent.
